what the FAQ?!

What the hell is a Beta?!

The “Beta” of a climb is the specific sequence of movements required to complete a climb or “problem”. Usually, climbs have intended Beta, which is the envisioned sequence of moves by the creator of the climb. However, because every climber is different, there are often many alternative ways to climb a single problem, creating lots of different Betas for one climb! Some Betas might suit tall climbers, some short, some might suit those with great strength, others those who love coordinated, dynamic movement. That's the joy of Beta Bud! You can share and view many different ways to conquer a single climb!

What the various “Tags” mean when uploading or viewing Beta

When uploading Beta, you are prompted to include Tags to your video Upload. These tags allow people to see what sort of Beta you have uploaded before viewing your video.

We encourage using at least one tag per Beta Upload, but the more you use, the better!

The current Tags, and what they mean are as follows:

Dynamic: A Beta where you use jumping or dynamic movements. E.g. Jumping from one hold to another.

Static:: A Beta where you use controlled, static movement. E.g. Slow, controlled movement.

Tall:: If you think your Beta would suit tall climbers

Short:: If you think your Beta would suit shorter climbers.

Beta Break: A Beta that you think is different to what was intended by the creator of the climb, e.g. Skipping holds, using holds in different ways etc.

Intended: This tag is used by the Gym to indicate the Beta as the setter intended. It is not available for general climbers uploads.

Can't see a tag that expresses your Beta? You can add custom tags! Just begin typing and you will see a “Create new tag” option in the dropdown!

What are Competitions?

Beta Bud competitions are fun events where climbers can compete with each other! You can join competitions through the mobile app, track your progress, and see how you rank on the leaderboard. Competitions are a great way to challenge yourself and connect with other climbers in your gym.
